The Client's Challenge
Cape Flattery Silica Mines (CFSM) requested that IMC Mining undertake an independent volumetric estimate of available saleable quality sand stocks on the mining lease. Large portions of the mining lease had no geological information. There was also limited drilling information to define horizons and working sections within the deposit. The existing estimate had a large spread of silica sand resource volumes.
IMC's Solution
IMC employed a three step process to estimate the volume of saleable sand stocks across CFSM mining lease. Firstly, using lidar data, IMC developed a complete 3D digital terrain wireframe of the entire deposit to model the potential sand resources. Secondly a site visit was organised to validate the lidar data and measure significant geological contact zones. Finally, IMC provided practical recommendations to the client on how the estimated sand endowment could be converted to a JORC compliant resource statement.
